- SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
- --------------------
-
- Solar activity was very low. Region 7757 (N13E37) is the

- than 2 MeV electron flux was at high levels.
-
- Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
- very low.
-
- The geomagnetic field has been at quiet to active levels
- for the past 24 hours. A brief period of activity was observed
- at 0600Z then receded to quiet levels by 1500Z.
-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
- expected to be quiet. High latitude stations may see unsettled
- levels at night.

-
- Well stated, Fred. I and my 12 year old son Eric are new hams (since
- 6/21). We had the good fortune of receiving our licenses before leaving on
- a 3-week trip to California and back. With our new calls and a new 2m
- mobile in the van, ham radio helped pass the long hours on the road. We
- had -great- time making contacts. Since I was driving, my son did most of
- the radio work. All along our route he was welcomed, congratulated, and
- encouraged by all the hams we encountered. In Texas, in fact, we stopped
- at a Radio Shack to buy a log book to record all of the contacts. Eric got
- a load of practice and -confidence-, and I think it's safe to say ham radio
- has us hook, line, and sinker. Even my wife got into the act copying down
- call signs, names, and locations as Eric made the contacts. (Last night she
- told our ham classinstructor he's created -two- monsters... :-)). It made
- a great vacation even better. While I'm at it, thanks and 73's to the folks
- on the Zia Connection, the Bomb Squad (147.210 in southern CA), and
- Megalink, among many others.
-
- We're both intending on upgrading to code eventually, but the Tech No-Code
- is what got us in and hooked. I doubt we would have had the incentive to
- go thru the code right off the bat. Now that we're in it, the incentive is
- there. And from my months of listening (the last few weeks from the
- Midwest to California), and several weeks of operation, the 2m I've heard
- is not CB in most areas (I know it is in some). I was a licensed CB
- operator (KAHB4941 - can't believe I remember that), and I got out of it
- long ago for obvious reasons.
-
- Those who constantly rail on the Tech No-Code license and No-Code ham -are-
- the ones doing ham radio a disservice, IMHO. Fortunately, we haven't
- encountered such folks - yet. Whining about it and waxing nostalgic
- about "the good ol' days" isn't going to change anything, and ham radio
- would be much better served with that energy going into finding ways to
- encourage new hams to become more interested and involved in the hobby.
